Document Summary

Bioa02 module 2 lec 15: the endocrine system. Adrenal gland has an outer cortex and an inner medulla. The inner medulla releases adrenalin (major stress hormone) The cortex produces steroid hormones one of which is cortisol. Endocrine system works by secreting hormones through the blood or extracellular fluid responses can be rapid or more longer lasting (insert slide 2) Endocrine gland contains cells which synthesize and secrete hormones which diffuse into the extracellular fluids and the blood. Hormones then move from the blood to the target tissue and they act on the target tissue through receptors which then leads to second messenger activation systems or elevation/alteration in gene transcription (insert slide 3) Hormones can also originate from nerves called neurohormones. Rather than the cell of a gland producing and secreting hormone, the nerves are secreting and producing hormones these hormones are secreted into the extracellular fluid and diffuse into the blood and to the target tissue.
