Document Summary

Lecture 17 neurons system of cells whose speciality is coordinating and controlling other cells. Not all animals place quite so much emphasis on massive computing power, but they still use neural circuits to control the rest of the cells in their bodies in order to maximize the chances of their survival. To survive, animals must rapidly coordinate millions, or even trillions of cells in their body. The nervous system is made up of billions of distinct, tree-shaped cells that function as microcomputers: neurons (there are other cells, like glia, that support neural computation). The theory that each neuron is a distinct computational unit is known as the neuron doctrine. Neurons are packed really tightly into the brain, and each can make connections (synapses) with thousands of others. Ohms): allows charged particle through them, but has limits through will flow down the electrochemical gradient until they reach.
