Document Summary

Atp stores and releases energy based on the concept of equilibrium. In cells we are away from equilibrium because we have atp, the adp and pi form is closer to equilibrium. Another way atp can break down is into amp and ppi (pyrophosphate) No matter how atp breaks down the free energy release is the same because in both. In this way the energetics are very similar to when it breaks down into adp cases we are moving towards equilibrium. When it breaks down into amp and ppi is that there is a pyrophosphatase which breaks down the ppi into 2 pi. All of the atp that is formed, is from adp. When you have amp, it has to be converted to adp and then into atp. Adenylate kinase reaction takes atp and amp, converts it into 2 adp. There is no mechanism in cells that directly converts amp into atp.
