CHMB41H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Cyclopropane, Morphine, Cyclopentane
Document Summary
We finished cyclohexane but we didn"t do 3, 4, and 5 carbons. Cyclic alkanes are alkanes in form of a ring. Chain conformation was the most stable confirmation which we went through extensively in terms of all the different substitutions you can have and ring flip. Cyclohexanes are not the only type of alkanes you can have. Cycloalkanes can start from 3 carbon rings. Triangle you see will give you cyclopropane, 4 ring will give you cyclobutane and 5 ring will give you cyclopentane. The thinking in late 1900s was that these molecules were flat on the plane of the paper. Ex: cyclobutane was a flat square on a plane of a paper. If this was the thinking then the bond angle for that particular cycloalkane would obviously conform with the geometric shape. So if the geometric shape is a triangle then the bond angle would be 60 degrees which is the bond angle of a triangle.
