Addressing Light Pollution - Recent Efforts by the City of Toronto
● Image of city on a late summer day - looks clean, attractive place - didn’t always
look this way
● Toronto 1920s - not clean
● Toronto hasn’t always had a waterfront, clean, environmentally resp
● Image of city on a late night -
● Toronto -- Mississippi & Atlantic flyway -- tdot at the convergence of these two
roots -- result = millions of birds flying through tdot
● TRCA bird monitoring -- individual birds shown up several times an year
● These roots are very ancient - adapted, evolved -- summer rounds (South
America) up to the Royal forest (below tundra) -- millions birds fly up
● Images of birds collected killed by buildings every year -- estimated that b/w 1-10
million birds killed in tdot each migratory season every year -- has been
incorporated by efforts of city of toronto through land use plans
● Planet earth currently experiencing.. -- ½ of all species will be extinct by the end
of this century -- significant b/c cause of human behavior - through the
destruction of habitat, overfishing, globalized trade, massive urbanization,
pollution, climate change
● Non-human species behavior adaptation doesn’t occur fast enough -- up to
humans to change their behaviors and how they do things
● Planners - take challenges like this
Causes of Annual Bird mortality
● Loss or destruction of habitat -- 33.3%
● Collisions with buildings, glass -- 31.7%
➔Pu -- evolved to migrate at night - less predators, use cover of darkness to move,
utilize moon to move around -- light from urban areas obscures their path --
results in their death
➔1887 -- Liberty lights lowered to death -- birds were drawn to the light and 1375
birds died that night --
Artificial Night Sky
● Increase in light pollution in NA -- growth in suburbs and sprawl
● North America - Toronto - DT very bright
➔Dunas Sq -- image of a flock of birds -- die of exhaustion or find any form of free
space -- tree reflected in the glass looks identical to the birds. Birds looking for
