HLTB16H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cowpox, Sexually Transmitted Infection, Smallpox
Document Summary
Back in the day there was the idea that disease happened because of bad deeds. Miasma was that disease occurred because of foul odour. Quarantine procedures were implemented at a local level. It was up to the local authorities on how they wanted to implement them. Pandemic: levels happening at a higher level than normal in multiple geographic areas. All these disease came over from europe, they all have high mortality rates. Small pox was higher at 30-40% mortality rate. Microbes gave evidence that they can cause disease, and not from miasma. Smallpox inoculation is one of the first examples of a vaccine. Milk maids were immune to smallpox, because they were exposed to a less severe virus (cow pox) and therefore they were less susceptible to small pox. Pasteurization is the idea that if you raise the heat just below boiling, you can kill many of the microorganisms that cause disease.
