Individual acts of punishment will be justified by reference to the existing laws and procedures of our justice system. We judge the appropriateness of some individual act of punishment by reference to exist. Having seen the concept of punishment, it is clear that the practice needs to be justified. Usually inflicting burdens or pain on a person is not morally acceptable.
