Document Summary

Theory of justice section 12 and 17. Justice as fairness: a restatement passage 41-42. Wants to provide an alternative to utilitarianism, intuitionism, and classical liberalism. Focuses on the basis structure of the society: the way in which the major social institutions distribute fundamental rights and duties and determine the division of advantages from social cooperation (6) Attempts to generalize the traditional idea of a social contract, by asking what principle of justice persons would choose from behind a veil of ignorance. Rawl"s theory of justice, justice as fairness, says that the basic structure of society ought to be regulated by two principles. The first principle has priority over the second principle: we are never to sacrifice anyone"s basic liberties in order to achieve the goals of the second principle. First principle: each person is to have an equal right to the most extensive scheme of equal basic liberties compatible with a similar scheme of liberties for others.
