Androgens and testosterone have both organizational effects (the amount of testosterone in the uterus triggers these) and activational effects (helps men perform) for males. Women have testosterone as well if there is too much, they will have organizational effects because they are not supposed to have a lot. For men, testosterone decreases with age, resulting in decreased interest in sex, irritability, and depression. Giving men testosterone increases sexual interest, ability, and aggression but placebos do so too, somewhat if you give them a placebo after telling them the effects of testosterone, they"ll still show all the effects even without testosterone. Affects sexual motivation but not orientation if you give homosexual men more testosterone, they will still want more homosexual sex. Same effects as testosterone has for males but for females instead. For humans (and dolphins, bonobos), this isn"t the case but there"s still a link between hormonal levels and sexual desire.
