Zygotes to infants: from one cell to billions. Germinal stage: first stage of prenatal development. Blastocyst (the ball of cells) implant into the lining of the uterus & split into 2 groups. Sex organs appear at about 3 months. Muscles develop and fetus begins to move, sleeping & waking cycles become fine tuned. Fetal brain development: the beginnings of the development of the brain can be seen during embryonic stage (b/w weeks 2-3, the first signs of major brain divisions (forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain) show at 4 weeks. Chapter 10 notes: lifespan development: differentiation b/w cerebral hemisphere, cerebellum, and the brain stem show at 11 weeks. Chapter 10 notes: lifespan development: babies start internalizing the sound of their native tongue, even before they are born, a study, looked at babies from french or german parents, found that babies cry w/ an accent. 5 months after conception, fetus begins to have control of voluntary motor movements.
