Nomothetic research: most psychological research, with the aim in understanding the average person. However, we are not always average we differ too. Individual differences: some psychological research focuses on why individual humans differ from one another. These are common questions, since describing intelligence has never been easy! The ability to measure intelligence may be beneficial but can also be controversial. Some say that intelligence is innate, whereas other say that it can be acquired. Benefits: we can assess to see if certain different educational approaches lead to higher success changeable: by saying that we can increase success, we can say that intelligence is. Controversy: e. g. sterilization based on iq score: this came from the idea that intelligence is innate. We assess by comparing an individual to many others using groups with similarities: includes groups such as age, gender, race, etc. Galton- a cousin of darwin, believed that people who had exceptional sensory abilities were more intelligent.
