PSYB45H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Dog Training, Reinforcement, Headache
Document Summary
Lecture 3 operant extinction & shaping (psyb45) Extinction is basic approach: operant extinction: reinforcement, less likely to engage in behaviour again. When behaviour is previously reinforced is no longer followed by. Factors to consider in extinction: need to make sure that the right reinforcers are being withheld, and that the reinforcers are fully controlled. Ex) everyone needs to be on board (everyone needs to know about the process of extinction). Need to withhold the actual reinforcers: extinction is most effective when paired w/ positive reinforcement of an alternative behaviour. Ignoring whining/yellin and praising the use of polite tone: setting is very important. 6. the target behaviour may get worse (increase) before it gets better (normal) Extinction burst: an increase in behavior during extinction. Need to be persistent w/ extinction interventions, not give up too soon: extinction may produce aggression. This is less likely when you are also positively reinforcing a desirable alternative behavior.
