PSYB45 Lecture 1
What is behaviour?
-Anything a person says or does
-Overt behaviours: Are visible to others, can be easily observed and recorded by others
-Covert behaviours: Private, internal, cannot be easily observed by others (eg feelings and thoughts)
-Dimensions of behaviour
-Duration
-Frequency
-Intensity or force
-In behaviour modification approach, it is important to be precise when describing behaviours and
behavioural problems
-Focus on the behaviours themselves, not labelling the person as the problem
-Behavioural deficits: Too little of a particular type of behaviour
-Behavioural excesses: Too much of a particular type of behaviour
-The most important characteristic of behaviour modification is its strong emphasis on defining
problems in terms of behaviour that can be measured in some way, and using changes in the
behavioural measure of the problem as the best indicator of the extent to which the problem is being
helped
-Treatment procedures and techniques focus on ways of altering an individual’s current environment to
promote better functioning
-Focus on various factors (including the individual’s own behaviours) that are contributing to
current problematic behaviour
-Altering stimuli in the person’s environment
-Behavioural modification methods and rationales can be described precisely
-Techniques of behaviour modification are often applied by people in their everyday lives
-New Year’s resolutions
-Parenting
-Coaching
-Pet training
-Quitting smoking
-Getting more exercise
