Principles of psychoparmacology: neuropsych illness = probs in brain. Psychopharmacology study of how drugs affect the ns & behaviour: also behavr via imging, drugs chem"l cmpds administered to produce a desired change in the body. Psychoactive drug substance: acts to alter mood, thought / behavr & used to manage neuropsychological illness. Small, uncharged molecs (e. g. o2, co2) = fat soluble, can freely cross bbb: rmr! Eliminating drugs: drugs are broken down (catabolize) in kidneys, liver, intestines, liver contains many enzymes: cytochrome p450 enzyme family breaks down almost all chem"ls (ethanol) Excreted in urine, feces, sweat, breast milk, & exhaled air: ex: breath of alcoholics, body particularly wants to let toxic substances out (cid:0) obv. Some cannot be removed: may adequately build up in body & become toxic: e. g. spec drugs need certain amt of intake, can"t be digested fast enough for another dose, etc.
