Document Summary

Basis of evolutionary theory: natural selection happens when. Environment favours some hereditable traits (ex. moths that camouflage with trees) In post industrial britain the soot that came from factories, trees became black and now it was more favourable to be black than brown and 90% of moths all became black: emotional expressions are adaptations. They are actions that helped our ancestors survive. They coincided wit emotions our ancestors felt paired together for so long (face expressions and feelings) we still use them, though no need for them anymore: evolution and culture. Primitive urges shape culture (ex. types of clothing in different cultures because of where the cultures started, if from hot area, hot clothing, from cold area, cold clothing) Culture also controls primitive urges after a culture is established, norms are set in place which help us control primitive urges that may not be appropriate in a given context.
