Most prominent disorders of verbal functions are aphasias& associated difficulties in verbal production dysarthria (defective articulation) and apraxia of speech. Defective auditory comprehension can result into unresponsive or socially inappriopriate behavior that is mistaken for negativism, dementia, or a psychiatric condition. The question lies on how much the aphasia contributes to the patient"s behavioral deficits disorders. Review of language and speech functions will include examining the following 1) spontaneous speech 2) repetition of words, phrases sentences. Broca"s area(expressive speech), wernicke"s area (receptive) 3) speech comprehension 4) naming 5) reading 6)writing. Purpose of examination should determine the kind of examination and test required. The tests focus on disorders of symbol formulation and associated apraxias and agnosias, and also, to elicit sample of behavior in each communication modality. Aphasia tests and batteries- widely used test are those that comprises of numerous test that measures many discrete verbal functions.
