Document Summary
Musical expectancy y expectancy- some earlier set of events sets up/anticipates an expectation for a future event y. are processes that fulfill our musical expectation processed more easily than those that don t: can ask about memory- would we have better memory for expected melodies or unexpected melodies y. Interest in musical expectancy has taken off: different empirical and theoretical approaches, one of the first theoretical approaches to musical expectancy was proposed by jones y. 1) pitch intervals- how wide were the pitch intervals y small pitch intervals- drove our expectation that we will continue to hear small pitch intervals y same for large pitch intervals. would pay attention to notes in expectancy region. If note occurred outside expectancy region (outside of pitch interval and time window), listener wouldn t recognize the note. expectancy drives our attention to certain notes + patterns in particular pitch space and certain areas of time y.
