SOCA02H3 Lecture 2: SOCIOLOGY WEEK 2 NOTES
Document Summary
Basic structure that reproduces societal values: there have been cautious concerns over perceived dangers of weakening or changing family ties. Includes concerns over shifts or changes in the makeup of the family: the family has often been glorified as safe and a key site to the production of well adjusted citizens. However it can also be a site of significant violence. In 2009- 4/10 homicides in canada occurred within family or intimate relationships. Within the west, the nuclear is often normalized: a nuclear family comprises two married opposite-sex parents and their biological children who share the same residence. Key features: heteronormative, monogamous, child-rearing, and spanning two generations. A more narrow definition is a traditional nuclear family when the man works outside the family unit for wages and the woman engages in unpaid labour within the home. Key features: same as the nuclear family but also explicitly male- dominated and single earner household.
