Document Summary

Idiophones - vibration by striking portion of instrument against another. Resonators underneath the bars which push waves through air. Butterfly disk opens and closes the resonator - changes amplitude. Dampening metal bar - shorter decay time in sound envelope. Different timbre from vibrophone, because it is made of wood bars. Very thin metal keys attached to wooden sound board. Larger the bell = lower fundamental hence more partials above it. Ringing the bell = number of fundamentals with different frequency, hence number of partials distributed throgh sound wave. Membranophones - vibrations of a stretched membrane (struck/ rubbed) Chordophones - vibrating string by striking, plucking, bowing. Zithers are instruments with resonating box underneath and strings that run the length of the body. String nearest player is melody string, rest are drone strings. Drone string = continuous sound at fixed pitch. Bottom strings are sympathetic strings - played because of resonance. String instrument, damper comes off and stops string from vibrating.
