A(cid:373)azi(cid:374)g thi(cid:374)g a(cid:271)out (cid:272)utti(cid:374)g dow(cid:374) forest or a(cid:374)(cid:455) area a(cid:374)d there"s (cid:374)ew forest or pla(cid:374)ts (cid:271)(cid:455) itself: pro(cid:272)ess of succession. Succession: somewhat predictable sequence of different plant species that follow each other after some kind of disturbance that opens new habitat or some process that creates new habitat where there was none before. The sequence here is that we first have pioneer species (first ones to occupy new habitat after a disturbance has opened it up. As this continues and as plants occupy the area we see soil building processes and shade cast by plants. Early successional plants are perfect examples of r-strategists- weedy or fugitive plants. There are 2 main categories of succession: primary vs. secondary. Primary takes place on a new land/substrate where there was no community before- very rare ex glacier sitting for 10,000 years through uplift of marine sediments or lava flows- nothing here before all has to be colonized.
