Natural selection eliminating harmful mutations and genetic diversity is maintained with mutations arising every generation. The harmful mutations sometime persists for a little time. Mutation constantly creating new types and selection is constantly eliminating them but not in a fast enough past so that there is no genetic diversity. Rare beneficial mutations spread within population don"t contribute to genetic diversity. Frequency dependant selection- allele has benefit it is rare, not when it is common---maintain genetic diversity. New pathogen mutation not recognized by its host therefore it is beneficial it"s going to spread until it becomes common---then host can recognize common allele. -this repetitive ongoing process is what results in genetic variation. One allele that was advantageous in one generation may not be in the next this maintains genetic diversity.
