Arguably, the art cinema is the first international alternative to hollywood"s hegemony within the global film market. Art cinema is an important version of cinematic modernism from the sound era. Modernism can be understood in at least two ways- Artists no longer believing that art"s role was to replicate nature or to reveal transcendent inner truths. Resulting relativism translated into formal strategies that transformed the way narratives were constructed in novels and how representation occurred in painting. Modernist artists were no longer convinced that art"s role was mimesis, leading to a search for the proper role of artmaking. One no longer asks what art represents, but how it represents. Art, having become more self-conscious about its own methods, becomes more challenging to its beholder and often embraces reflexivity. The chief subject of modernist art becomes art itself. Art becomes the key to understanding art.
