Economically disadvantaged accused often had no representation whatsoever except for murder: only very poorest among us are actually eligible for legal aid. Important american case: gideon vs. wainright: gideon charged with homicide, representing himself took to scc and said for such serious crimes everyone deserves legal aid. First canadian legal aid program: ontario 1967. Only provided to those on social assistance or to those with personal incomes less than social assistance levels: in grand scheme of things, very few people actually qualify for legal aid. Anyone who works full time even minimum wage is responsible to hire their own lawyers. Hiring a high-end lawyer for serious cases can bankrupt you spend 100- If you"re convicted or acquitted in the end, you don"t get the money back. People argue that going to court is a financial punishment in and of itself.
