Jack"s fear of death is informed by his fear of the death of his privilege: cold war: division of the world into binaries. Capitalist vs. communist, ally vs. enemy, developed vs. Cold war colonial expansion: united states protectors of democracy : jack aligns himself with hitler in order to reaf rm some kind of white power. Jack incurs the eruption of male biological violence: jack has to confront his lack of masculinity. He is faced with vernon"s hyper masculinity, with his own underwhelming, un- masculine appearance.
