The poem is a self-anointed representative of the community. One does not go into this journey when in sin. This is the block he mentions in his poem. Dante thus needs help to remove this block, one of the three helpers is virgil. Virgil: he is in the highest level of hell because he is a good guy who was born before the coming of christ. It is not a bad place, mor of like a place-holder area, or waiting area. It eventually will be done away with and there will only be heaven and hell. The people in limbo will then be placed in one of the two. Virgil is a man of virtue, but not christian virtues since he was born before christ. Since virgil doesnt have those he cannot go to paradise. Virgil accompanies dante to the top of mount purgatory but is not allowed past it, so.
