• What is the Islamic world and how did we find out about it?
• Islam/Islamic is not clear. It can refer to many things like the religion of Islam, doctrinal beliefs,
religious traditio elaorated y the Musli …., it can also represent the historical record of
Islam.
• Can refer to a territorial concept of the Islamic world.
• Not monolithic, and complicated because the modern world is not organized in its nation states.
• The new creation of a new Islamic state/caliphate we hear nowadays.
• The term is also used casually as in Islamic art, architecture, science but not accurate because
there is only very little religious art etc.
• Other terms need to be familiar with: Muslim – inherent of Islam the religion.
• Muslim world is problematic. What do you mean by that? Not everyone within the territory are
Muslims. There can be Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians, Yazidis etc.
• Islam comes from the word Salama = to surrender and commit oneself to God.
• Islam is the derivative of that verbal world.
• Muslim also comes from that word Salama.

• Another term; ISLAMICATE from the patter of persionate, italionate- something that is influence
in the Italian culture etc.
• So he suggested Islamicate; anything that is influenced by islam we refer it so as islamichate.
• ISLAMISIST - one who studies the Islamic world and ISLAMIST - a thinker, fundamentalist, an
activist.
