Document Summary

Illiberal democracy: liberalism and democracy are not the same thing and you can have one without the other. Democracy is about extending power to the people- a radical idea: transforms the way we think of the right to govern as something that is given by god to something that is given by the people. Democracy an idea opposed by liberals, almost as opposed to democracy as they were to monarchy. Liberalism about rights and freedoms, freedom of press. Participation is not a paradox- schlozman, verba and brady. Selective gratification: selective material benefits, selective social gratification, selective civic gratifications. Most people do not cite selective benefits as a reason for participating. Selective social gratification is important to social types of participation. Civic gratification is high for all forms of voluntary participation. When people participate in activities with intended policy outcomes, they identify collective policy outcomes as an important motivation for participation thus many people participate irrationally.
