Pre-statute of westminster era (i) red river rebellion [first riel rebellion] (1869-1870) Canadian militia units accompany british regulars (under the command of col. garnet. Riel flees before expedition arrives. (ii) nile expedition (relief of khartoum) (1884) The macdonald government allows (now) general wolseley to raise a force of nearly 400 voyageurs (and a handful of militiamen and other volunteers) in an ultimately unsuccessful effort to rescue british general gordon at khartoum. Although not a canadian military force per se, this imperial force is raised by the british in canada with the endorsement and cooperation of the. Sixteen of the volunteers die from disease/accidents. (iii) northwest rebellion [second riel rebellion] (1884-1855) The canadian militia suffers perhaps ~150 casualties in suppressing the rebellion without (this time) the assistance of british troops. (iv) boer war (1899-1902) Nearly 8,000 troops (volunteers) go to south africa to assist british forces fighting the boers.
