Document Summary

If you look straight dim light hit the cone not clear. Look away dim light hit the road the peripheral better visio. They are light-sensitive neurons that convert light energy into electrical energy icells. Note that rods and cones are neurons themselves! Our retinas have 2 main types of photoreceptor: cones and rods. Rods and cones are neurons, though they do not fire action potentials , but instead respond to stimuli with graded membrane potentials. They are still neurons, just don"t fire ap. Each retina contains ~6 million and 120 milliards. Cones and rods have the same basic structure. In the outer segment: the cell membrane folds into disk-like layers which contain the visual pigments that respond to light. In the inner segment: the nucleus and organelles for photosynthesis. A basal layer: synapse that releases glutamate. Both receptor types point toward the back of the eye. Light sensitive part are at the back of the eye segment.
