Document Summary
Piaget found that 4-5 year olds did not have a good grasp of the idea of conservation. Merely changing the appearance of objects doesn"t change the number of quantity of that object. Some time between 5 and 8 years we see a shift in how children reason with conservation of matter. Kindergartners" estimates were further to the right the higher the number. But, overestimate small numbers and underestimate large numbers (numbers in the middle) Do not dishabituate to ratios of 3:2. Ratio isn"t enough to make them think they"re different. Think of this as reasoning in categorical way if difference is big enough to shift into a different category they can pass test. Object placed in case, screen comes up, second object added, hand leaves empty. Two conditions: babies see two objects there when screen drops (possible outcome) or impossible outcome where one object is there when screen drops down.
