Lecture 5:
They tried to see if they could predict people’s BIG FIVE results based on their fb likes. They
had 6 million people to complete a short version of the big 5 then with their consent they took
their facebook like data and tried to create an algorithim which calculated your personality based
on facebook likes and it is supposed to be 85% accurate.
Missed up to “The 5 factor Model: Biological and environmental components”
Personality traits seem to have a biological/genetic and environmental basis.
Some evidence of a relationship between big 5 traits and specific brain regions.
Evolutionary Theory: women might be particularly likely to look for men who will provide
them with resources and stick around so they might be more selective. However, men look for
women who give them the best chance of healthy offspring young/young looking, with wide
hips. So they want to have as much sex as possible.
Regions of the brain:
Extraversion is correlated with brain regions responsible for an approach orientation (going out,
meeting people, etc) is correlated with a reward approach.
Neuroticism is correlated with brain regions related to threat punishment and negative affect.
Conscientiousness is correlated with brain regions related to task directedness, goal-orientation.
Agreableness is related brain regions correlated with empathy for others.
Openness isn’t correlated with any brain region.
Personality is usually measured by self-report. There are biases which influence how people
respond.
1) Social desirability bias: you want to come off in a good way. In particular, if other people
are going to see this research.
2) Acquiescence bias: people have a tendency to agree with all questions which gives you a
neutral score.
Also, how we act is not just about us as individuals but also about the circumstance that we are
in. So situations can effect people a lot more than the actual personality. Also we measure
behaviour with more specificity then traits. So there are components to extraversion such as
assertiveness and gregariousness and to determine a specific behavior we might not need to look
at extraversion but it might be more productive to look at a certain trait. However, even if
personality does only predict like 10% of our behaviour it doesn’t mean its not important
because there is still so many general factors which could have influenced behaviour.
Kurt Lewin: Behaviour is a function of a person’s environment, and the person
B= f (P, E)
When it comes to personality traits, there is evidence for cross-situational consistency
