PSY336H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Variance, Heritability, Meta-Analysis
Document Summary
Chronic happiness level: aggregate moment-to-moment fluctuations of happiness/mean level of happiness that cuts through all variations. Looking for factors that account for the variations in chronic happiness levels: many things influence happiness levels at a population level, developed from a meta-analysis of the literature. 10% from life circumstance: includes region (geographic location), culture, wealth and income, demographic variables, etc. Intentional activities may be effective because they are harder to adapt to possible to adapt to them (e. g. saying same thing every night for counting blessings, etc. ), but this is not how we engage in these things episodic in nature (e. g. do appraisal when we need to, etc. : become specific events and do not necessarily adapt to them. & lyubomirsky, 2004: not necessarily up to 40%, but activities had a larger effect than circumstance. Still ~40% leftover between time 1 and time 3 room for fluctuation so happiness is not necessarily set.
