Document Summary

Psy424 - lecture 1: need to belong - the desire for. The donner party was a group of american pioneers that set out for california in a wagon train. When they started off their journey, they had an obstacle where they had to climb mountains, and were not used to the wilderness. The second obstacle came a big desert; but by the time they crossed the desert, it was winter and people were ill-prepared and died. At the end of the whole expedition only 46/87 people survived. Those who survived had more social connection compared to those that died (the larger the family they travelled with, the more likely they would survive) For 16 solo travelers only 3 survived. Even for the people that died, those that were likely to survive longer had a larger family size. Sharing resources ( and not sharing with outgroups) Providing assistance: more likely to provide for family members compared to outgroups.
