Document Summary

James lovelock a chemist who perceived the largest living system of them all. Searched for signs of life in the solar system. Focused on planetary atmospheres -> found that when you look at the atmospheres of each planet, they are very different. Earth has methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen which are being burned all the time -> very reactive in comparison to other atmospheres. Saw the planet as a living entity -> named it gaia. We are a part of earth(cid:859)s (cid:272)he(cid:373)istr(cid:455) Spiritual point of view gaia as a greek goddess. A view of the earth that sees it as a self-regulating system made up from the totality of organisms, the surface rocks, the ocean and the atmosphere tightly couples as an evolving system. The theory sees this system as having a goal: the regulation of surface conditions so as always to be favorable as possible for contemporary life.
