Document Summary

Secondary groups: are larger and more impersonal, involve social interaction in narrow range of activities over shorter period of time that create weaker emotional ties (sociology class) In-group members: those who belong to a group. Out-group members: those who are excluded from an in-group, say if you really like someone but they are not in your family because they are not a family member/biologically related to you. In-group members typically draw boundary separating themselves from members of out- group. Also try to keep out-group members from crossing the line (think of what possible members of frats or sororities have to go through to get in) Think of the caste system of india, you stay within your caste. Boundaries separating groups: race, class, athletic ability, academic talent, physical attractiveness. Who we associate with, usually choosing those like us and people who share similar interests, people of the same education, share some of the same characteristics like race, ethnicity, gender, etc.
