Canadian , etc. but a person answering british could also say english welsh . Scottish : when someone says british, they are indicated they are a british subject, that is a citizen of the state called great britain. If someone answers english, they are speaking to the english nation, they connect and identify to this one particular group of people: nationalism can be a unifying force and can be divisive and deadly. There is no state without a specific territory held together by a centre of power: specific boundaries. The state has a monopoly over the legitimate means of violence. Therefore the state claims the sole right to apply coercive force: any use of force that is not authorized is seen as an act of violence.
