Document Summary

Changed more in our lives than any other form of mass media. Earliest recorded music: middle ages - music box: first time anyone was able to playback music; technically a recreation but is the first step in sound recording. 1800s: development of the phonograph (1877): cylinders = wound up by spring + phonograph needle -> playback non-amplified sound. Cylinders = made of hard compressed wax which doesn"t last long -> degraded easily. 1910: phonograph - records (78s): flat; made of form of resin. Very fragile but more durable than wax cylinders. Records = made of vinyl - can"t break easily. Denser material -> closer grooves -> more music on each side (25-30 min. on each side) Same time 45s: smaller; played single song - inexpensive - youth could afford to buy music -> opened up to youth; everyone had access to music.
