December 6, 2011 Why Bibliography? - Descriptive bibliography assignment will be handed back during the final exam - 2 hours, 2 rooms - Section 1: vocabulary fill in the blank • 10 x 1 pt. each • Study the vocabulary sheet on Blackboard • Remember the exam is cumulative - Section 2: format and collation statements •10 x 3 pts. each •Review the lecture slides format and collation •Study the characteristics of the various formats we’ve used (folio, quarto); good to review the folding exercise we did in class •Make sure you can read and understand collation statements •It’s not going to be something you’ve seen before •Review slides, Williams and Abbott - determine leaves and gather- ing E.g. •How do you explain which leaves in a book are signed? •How do you indicate when a page has been added or removed from a gathering •How do you describe the number of leaves in a book? E.g. 4°: a4A-C 4 E4G ; 34 leaves, $2 signed. • a = 4 • A = 4 • B = 4 • C = 4 • D = 4 • E = 4 • F = 4 • G = 4 - Section 3: Short answer. Choice of 2 questions •1 x 15 pts. McKenzie - changed the way bibliography is done - Bibliography and The Sociology of Texts - Panizzi Lectures (British Library) from 1985 - Book history as we know it today came about in part as a result of McKenzie’s ideas - Sociology of texts: “the human motives and interactions which texts evolve at every stage of their production, transmission, and consump- tion” (15) - This theory sparked and inspired Darnton’s Circuit etc. — they are a direct outgrowth of the idea that books are social objects - Appreciating human aspects that made the physical object come into being: circulation, production Form Effects Meaning - Reader determines meaning of the book - New readings - reading society into the text - Interaction between reader and form - Interpretation and form affects meaning: form tells reader how to in- terpret the book even more than the content - McKenzie’s examples of James Joyce’s Ulysses - Retelling of the Odyssey in a day, in Dublin; self-reflexive book - Joyce was interested in the book as a form - Ulysses is set in 1904, which was a leap year; the leap year is men- tioned a lot in the work. Significance in the form of the book? (Original version: 366 leaves = 366 days in leap year; on page 360 the main character mediates on cyclical nature of things ) - Direct relationship between what happens between content and high- er bibliographic codes - However, subsequent versions of Ulysses have different pagination - Virginia Woolf: started a printing press with husband; her pagination decisions in the original versions (she printed the original versions) are highly significant - Form matters to the way we read the text - Triple-decker novel: book published in 3 volumes; circulating libraries liked these because they could lend the same books to 3 people (some people who ordered the book wouldn’t read in a linear fashion because the library might send them out not in order; authors began to write with this format in mind, might recap in volume 2 what happened in volume 1 - Congreve epigraph? - Essay that outlines that the author doesn’t control the work; the read- er does - Epigraph - had a lot of random capitalization, punctuation -- hey, these capitalization “errors” are really significant - Bibliography matters: what may seem like accidental errors are actu- ally important for understanding content of text Form Effects Text (ctd.) - Materiality matters - Form cannot be separated from content - Form is content - form can be content itself - “basic assumption that form effects sense” (McKenzie 18) - Linguistic codes vs. bibliographic codes Failure; or where are all the freakin’ bibliographers? - Almost any digital edition you read - How something is laid out on a page has to do with the message of text - Being able to question the format you’re receiving = important (e.g. a story on the front of the newspaper vs. back even if it’s the same story; top of website or bottom?) - Start interrogating the types of information you receive - Electronic edition of Frankenstein, ed. Stuart Curran: no bibliographic information which edition, how much it cost, who was reading it -- only linguistic codes (when this is scholarly -- we expect more from it) - Electronic edition - acts as if there was no history of material objects and their preservation - Bibliographers and BaMS students need to think about this, the type of information you’re receiving Form Alone does not determine meaning - “Whatever its metamorphoses, the physical forms of any text, and the intentions they serve, are relative to a specific time, place, and person. This creates a problem only if we want meaning to be abso- lute and immutable. In fact, change and adaptation are a condition of survival, just as the creative application of texts is a condition of their being read at all (Mackenzie 60-61) - “the physical forms of any text, and the intentions they serve, are relative to a specific time, place and person” (McKenzie 60-61) - McKenzie vs. traditionalists likes Bowers and W.W.
