Anth100 - lecture #3 -topic: the primates (chapter 4) The study of nonhuman primates -- fossil and living apes, monkey and prosimians, including their behaviour and social life. Phylogenetic classification - descending hierarchy of classifications, from most inclusive to least inclusive. Principal factor in determining how organisms are assigned to taxonomic categories. Analogies: similarities similar adaptation to similar selective pressures convergent evolution. Anthropoids are all monkeys and all apes (new and old world primates) (this will be asked in the exam) They all have big brains, tactile changes and seeing. Primates will look after their own off springs and other off springs. Chimpanzees (aunts and uncles look after niece, brothers, sisters) Except for orangutans: they are very lonely, do not cooperate with others. Reduction in facial projection and sense of smell. Lemurs: highly social animals, need to be with other species, endangered (eat same as lorises) Lorises : found in sri lanka (eat bugs, flowers, plants, fruits)
