Overview: our place among primates, homologies and analogies, primate tendencies, prosimians, monkeys and apes, endangered primates, primate evolution, chronology, early primates, miocene hominoids, primatology: study of nonhuman primates fossil and living apes, monkeys, and prosimians including their behavior and social life. Terrestrial monkeys and apes: primates that live on the ground rather than in the trees. Those most closely related to us: great apes, specifically chimpanzees and gorillas: zoological taxonomy: assignment of organisms to categories (taxa) according to their relationship and resemblance. Humans are mammals that, at a lower taxonomic level, belong to the order primates. Terms: unguiculate - nails or claws, claviculate - clavicle or collar bone, calcarine - occipital area toward back of skull, hallux - big toe, caecum - beginning of large intestine. Homologies and analogies: organisms should be assigned to the same taxon on the basis of homologies: similarities they jointly inherited from a common ancestor.
