Anth 100 lecture #2 culture (chapter 8) Culture: allows us to have a place within the society: helps define who you are, all the different things that makes us get together. Human culture: learned, shared, patterned, symbolic, shared, adaptive. Culture is shared: within groups, across groups. Can culture define groups: culture is part of human nature, culture is all-encompassing, culture is integrated, cross culture communication errors. Example: the distance between each person according to cultural beliefs. Symbol: something that stands for something else. No other animal has elaborated cultural abilities to the extent that homo sapiens has. Models and patterns should be treated as flexible. Lee"s push-pull theory (it"s only an example of immigration) Process by which child learns his or her culture. Why do cultural difference matter: the same objects, actions, or events are not universal, the human condition is ambiguous, cross-cultural communication errors can be problematic, there is value in diversity, different ways of understanding the world.
