ANTH 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: K–Ar Dating, Canine Tooth, Radiocarbon Dating
Document Summary
There is a far greater chance that of finding human remains in the same area where they have been found before as opposed to finding them in areas that no one has ever looked. Researchers typically dig in areas where there are sediments exposed from the time period of interest. Most human remains over a million years old and all of them over 1. 8 million years old have been found in africa, mostly in the great rift valley. Caves often house well preserved bones - caves protect them from weathering. Most people did not live in caves, however. In anthropology, fossil means any preserved early human remains, no matter their condition. Human fossil record has multiple meanings: 1) the interpretation of human evolution, based on the data of the collected remains, and 2) simply the assemblage of bones collected. Teeth preserve the best of any human remains, followed by bones of the skull.
