Document Summary

The types of expectations, moral codes, policies, and laws will differ based on the size and complexity of the society. Political organization: the way a society maintains order internally and manages affairs externally. In terms of politics, anthropology mainly focuses on the distribution of power. Political relationships are managed by the use of power, authority, and prestige. Power: the ability to compel another person to do something that he or she would not otherwise do. Social, economic, and political inequality stem from uneven access to, or distribution of, resources. Power is used in two ways: coercively, and persuasively. Coercive power uses physical force or threat of it. Persuasive power relies on changing someone"s behaviour through argumentation using religious or cultural beliefs. Offers a reward for compliance rather than a threat. Prestige: the positive reputation or high regard of a person or other entity merited by actions, wealth, authority, or status.
