BIOL 312 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Naked Mole-Rat, Earwig, Termite
Document Summary
Review (only answering questions) dec 4 at 10am. Sociality, broadly defined (co-operative) interactions with members of your species. Insects exhibit an enormous diversity of social interactions including species with highly complex and sophisticated colonies (e. g. ants, bees, termites) examples of eusociality. Wilson and michener"s definition: 1) division of labour: caste system involving sterile/non- reproductive individuals assisting those that reproduce. 2) cooperation in taking care of young: overlap of generations contributing to colony function. Crespi and yanega"s definition: 1) castes: irreversible at some point before reproductive maturity. 2) alloparental care: helping by the less-reproductive caste. Depends which of the terms are most important. Other (non-insect) eusocial organisms: naked mole rat and some types of shrimp. Subsociality: two major routes: aggregations (spend time in large groups): often aposematic (advertising unpalatability), cooperative feeding. Often occurs without nesting (blattodea, orthoptera, dermaptera, psocoptera, Solitary or communal nesting (orthoptera, dermaptera, coleoptera, hymenoptera, isoptera).
