Lect 37
Northern Elephant seal: slaughtered to near extinction. Recently, population increasing,
Steller sea lion: considered threats to salmon stock. Culled by machine gun, clubbing, at breeding
rookeries. Numbers increasing.
Harbour seal: heavily exploited and culled for almost a century. Some schemes for destroying harbour
seals. Down to almost nothing in 1970. Increasing to historical (1930-1960).
ESSAY QUESTION: Worth 1/3 of the final exam
Outline a research program directed towards explaining the evolutionary significance of the plumage
coloration of the spotted towhee. Form = function.
Background on plumage coloration in birds. Summary of previous relevant literature on life history of
SPTO. Summary of previous relevant literature on plumage coloration in SPTO and description of
research question.
Relevant life history data to be collected and how and field/lab experimental protocols to be undertaken
(20 mks). Not interesting in the result (why flank color is rufous) but want to know HOW you would
figure out what the importance of the coloration is.
Caribou in BC: antlers in both sexes, large hooves and dew claws.
