BIOL 345 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Reciprocal Altruism, Inclusive Fitness, Kin Selection
Document Summary
Facultative altruism: helping someone at your own expense temporary/permanent cost to the donor. Donations to charity, rescuing someone from a fire/from drowning. Natural selection will favor cooperation when both donor and recipient benefit (mutualism). Ns favors altruism when recipient benefits at little cost to donor or is situation is later reciprocated (reciprocal altruism or direct reciprocity). Ground squirrel gives alarm calls to other colony members on detection of a predator. Costly as it can result in death meets criterion of facultative altruism. Most calls made by adult females with offspring. Males aren"t 100% sure their kids are theirs they aren"t resident so the members of the community aren"t their kin. Assume colony where each female only takes care of her young. Even if mother dies, her offspring will likely survive. Altruistic behaviour will spread through the population if enough of her offspring survive. Kin selection (ground squirrel): requires parental care and help of relatives to survive.
