Calls on the shared history/literary tradition between the reader and the author. Adds layers of meaning or resonance to a literary work. Western writers often allude to the bible, classical texts, or well known literature/art works. Allusion can be inclusive (accessible) and exclusive (inaccessible) at the same time i. e. , a biblical reference might be accessible to a christian but inaccessible to someone who does not have knowledge of the christian religion. So(cid:373)eo(cid:374)e ca(cid:374) still e(cid:374)joy a (cid:449)ork e(cid:448)e(cid:374) if they do(cid:374)"t (cid:374)ecessarily u(cid:374)dersta(cid:374)d or recog(cid:374)ize an allusion. People feel smart when they understand a reference or allusion: allows the writer to flatter the reader. Work of art produced as a rhetorical exercise. Is a poem that offers a description of a scene/work of art/thing: poem inspired by or stimulated by another work. Relates to another medium of art by defining the essence and form to make it more relatable to the audience.
