Power is only over mortals: daughter of zeus, therefore can"t affect the gods, could at start of myth, but not at the end. Gives skills of agriculture to men: probably fertilizer, limits her power. Hymns about female deities are about how their powers are brought under zeus"s control. Eros is either aphrodite"s son by aries/companion. Two stories of aphrodite"s birth: daughter of zeus and dione, produced when uranus was castrated by cronus. Brides prayed to aphrodite before wedding day. Aphrodite is often depicted w/ harmonia, peitho, and the erotes: winged nature indicates that unrestrained nature.
