Chaos (abyss); everything is mixed together: tartarus and gaia. First generation doesn"t generally appear due to the idea that only male rulers can be: cronus-rhea. Chaos: eros, gaia (female, tartarus, erobus, night (female) Greeks did not see sexual reproduction between male and female, rather between subordinate and dominant: subordination of female principle begins. Eros and night: higher sky, day. Night (asexually: doom, fate, death, furies, intimacy, old age, strife. Asexually produced children are not good anymore. Gaia and ouranos (earth and sky: titans, cyclopes, hundred-handed ones. Union between earth and sky is marriage- a problem; they are shown to be close with each other having no space for humans to live. Gaia is always in state of pain (labour); can"t give birth. Cronus is given a stone knife nd lies in wait for his father to come home. Cronus castrates ouranos- separating earth and sky, now having enough space for humans to live (hesiod)
