HSTR 230A Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: North West Company, Selkirk Mountains
Document Summary
It is important because without it we wouldn"t know what was being traded back and forth. Told us what was more valuable, and what because more or less valuable as the times changed. Wanted to stop the north west company, favoured the hudson"s bay. Banned the sale of pemmican, to anyone who wasn"t a part of the hudson"s. Wanted to either get rid of the north west company completely, or wanted it to join with the hudson"s bay company. Saw the north west company as serious competition: thinking about both the primary and secondary sources what kind of personality would suit being a fur trader. Would have to be really cut throat. Couldn"t be lazy, would have to have a lot of physical strength to push canoes, and row down rivers. Would have to value really hard work. Beneficial way to be close to the aboriginals, but still stay european enough to be satisfied.
